What is Night Time?
Night Time is a confidential out of hour’s service that runs between 11pm and 3 am by volunteers of the SU. The service exists as a first point of call for students. It should be stressed that the Night Time volunteers are NOT professionals but we try and act as professionally as we can.
Clients utilise the Night Time service for a variety of reasons. The following is a list of some of the things that Night Time can provide help with:
· Tea & Chat (many students who are lonely/bored/upset/can’t sleep just come in to talk), Hand out condoms, sanitary products and pregnancy tests using the C-card scheme, Basic first aid (a first aid kit should always be available in the Night Time room), In more severe cases put students in touch with university security staff, the local services, mental health advisors, Samaritans and many other support organisations depending on the situation.

How do clients access Night Time?
There are two ways of contacting the Night Time service. The first and most common approach is that students ring the doorbell and are let in by both volunteers. The other option is to call the Night Time number. This option exists for students who don’t wish to or can’t contact the service face to face.
Who is in charge of Night Time?
The service falls under the remit of the welfare department and therefore the Vice President Welfare and Education is ultimately responsible. The day to day activity of the service is run by two Night Time Coordinators, preferably a male and a female volunteer, who are responsible for ensuring that the service runs every night and finding cover for volunteers when necessary.
Who uses Night Time and who volunteers?
The Night Time service is run by students for students. The clients are students of the university and the volunteers are students themselves. This is one of the great assets of the service. The fact that the volunteers are students themselves means that the volunteers are able to empathise and connect with the issues that clients may bring up. On every night there will be a male and a female volunteer present to ensure the greatest amount of flexibility. The volunteers are students who wish to give something back to the other students and choose to volunteer to help out other students. Many people also become involved in the Night Time service as a means of becoming involved in the SU. Not only that but volunteering for the Night Time service looks great on the CV and we are currently looking into various forms of accreditation for the volunteers.
