► ADVICE: for Reps

ADVICE FOR REPS

Being a Programme of Study Representative (Course Rep; Rep) is a challenging but very rewarding post.  The more you put in, the more you and all the students on your course will get out of it.  Contact the Student Representation Coordinator, Ned, with any queries: e.crowley@tsd.ac.uk

BE AHEAD OF THE GAME

To be a successful Rep:

- MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN to the students you represent and to the staff for your Programme of Study - lecturers, admin staff, Head of School etc.  Good communication is key!  Consider setting up regular seminars, or 5 or 10 minutes at the end of a lecture or two per week for students to approach you with problems.  Make sure everyone has your email address for anyone who may want to talk you in confidence.

- PREPARE for meetings.  Beforehand: check the date, time and place; have notes for all the points you wish to raise; and read the minutes from the last meeting to refresh your memory, are there any points you want to come back to, or check progress on a change?

- MAKE THE MOST of meetings.  Take notes, be polite and constructive and remember that the staff are on your side!  They are taking the time to meet you to hear what you have to say.  Remember that telling staff what's GOOD is as important as what's BAD.

- LET THE WORLD KNOW of your good work after meetings.  ALWAYS report back to your students and let them know what the staff had to say about all the points raised.  Again, consider talking for a few minutes after a lecture, sending round a group email, throwing together a note for the Info board for your course.  Success stories should always be spread around!

- THE SU is always here to support you.  Contact the SU - particularly the Student Representation Coordinator - if you have anything to say about the representation.  Tell us if you feel your an issue you've raised isn't being taken seriously or dealt with satisfactorily and we can help you take it further.  Equally, tell us when something's gone well, or if a member of staff or a student has been really helpful in making a change; we always want to hear when the system's working, as well as being here to help when it's not!
