Help with Academic Appeals

As a student you have the right to appeal some decisions made by the University that affect your studies. Some examples of where you might want to consider putting in an academic appeal are if you have failed a module, have been withdrawn from your course, or disagree with a decision reached by a formal University panel. The process is used to try and resolve issues as effectively and as fairly as possible.

Although appealing University decisions is usually an option for students, there are many things to bear in mind before you make the decision. Academic Appeals can be submitted on limited grounds.  However, where appeals are upheld, they will normally try to get students back to the position they were in before the failing they’d identified had occurred. Here are some things to think about before you contact us for some support:


Grounds for Appeal

You can only submit an appeal if your situation corresponds to specific grounds outlined in the policy. For example, it is not enough to submit an appeal to say you’re unhappy with the outcome of an exam or grade. Similarly, disagreement with the academic judgement of the examiner will not be considered a valid ground for appeal by the University.

Because of this, it is worth familiarising yourself with the grounds for appeal before you submit your request to the University. If you have had a look at the policy document and feel you have a valid case for an Academic Appeal, we have staff who can support you through the process.


Evidence

Another important factor to consider when putting together an Academic Appeal is the evidence you can access. It is vital that when you submit your appeal, you support your perspective with appropriate evidence to give the University a full understanding of the issues you’ve identified.
