Student Voice Representatives

We have 8 Student Voice Rep positions available for the year 2019/20; these are replacing our former ‘faculty rep’ positions.

Student Voice Reps are a key asset to the Students’ Union as they not only liaise with SU Course Reps to collect feedback from each course in their faculty, but they have a platform to suggest ideas and raise concerns within the University in order to better the student experience. Working through suggestions, complaints, and queries, the Student Voice Rep is one of the key voices for your academic improvement. They will directly feed into the newly created Academic Institute Boards, and will work alongside the SU’s Campus and Group Presidents to make sure that the University is constantly thinking of student input when it comes to making changes that directly affect the students on your course.

After some changes to the University structures, 5 Faculties have been merged into 3 Institutes, with courses based across multiple campuses. The names of the new institutes are yet to be formally announced but there will be one Institute for Business, one that will bring the Athrofa and the Faculty of Humanities & Performing Arts together, and one created by combining the Faculties of Art & Design and Architecture, Computing and Engineering.  


We need a team of 2 Student Voice representatives per Institute to represent the students, as well as course reps on courses within those Institutes. We will also require a further two reps, one each to represent the students of Birmingham and London.

This means we are looking for a team of 8 Student Voice Representatives. You are eligible to apply for this position if you are a student, and experience as a Course Rep is desired but not necessary.  You are only eligible to be a SVR for the Institution in which you are studying. There will be an interview process to determine the rep positions, and we’ll be looking to appoint a team with experience of studying at different campuses and at different levels.

As a bonus, we offer a 3-part bursary (£150 per term, total of £450 a year) to fulfil this role, so a little something to reward you for your hard work and dedication.



  • Attend training during the summer


  • Attend Institute Board meetings and speak on behalf of the students in your Institute. You must be prepared to travel to the meetings if they are not on your campus. The SU can help with this and cover public transport travel expenses or Lift Share with staff.


  • Work alongside your counterpart to hold 1 Focus Group each term to collect feedback from students of specific themes or issues and submit the feedback to the SU in advance of the Institute Board meeting in order to enable the Students’ Union to submit a written report to each meeting.


  • Attend at least 2 Pop Up Unions per month to engage students in discussion about their academic experience (1.5 hours per Pop Up; total of 3 hours per month)


  • Meet with the Campus Presidents, Group President and Student Voice Coordinator at least 4 weeks before each Faculty Board to help create the main Faculty Board Report, and update on your progress or any academic related themes or issues that need attention.


  • Attend Campus Council where possible to report on your findings and progress.


  • Use social media, e-mails, online forums or vlogs to engage with off-campus students to make sure we are capturing the opinion of off-campus, distance and work-based students.


You can put yourself forward for this role by emailing outlining the reasons why you’d like to be a Student Voice Rep, and some ideas you have for changes you’d like to see or methods you would use to improve engagement with students. Please set the subject of the e-mail as 'I want to be a Student Voice Rep'. Those shortlisted will be emailed, and interviews will be arranged for July. You will need to be available over the summer period for training; dates to be arranged with successful applicants. The deadline for applications is 21st July 2019.
