Voting is the Big Vote is easy. It’s all done online through our website; tsdsu.co.uk/vote.
Our elections use the Single Transferable Voting system. This allows our members to cast their vote by rating candidates on their preference.
Voters can rate as many or as few candidates as they want, and can even vote to Re-Open Nominations, which restarts the election process.
To get elected, a candidate must have over 50% of the votes – this is known as the quota. Voting is done in rounds; if in the first round, no-one reaches the quota, then the candidate with the lowest vote is eliminated and their vote shared between the remaining candidates based on the voter’s preference – this is repeated until a winner is declared.
In round one, none of our candidates got over 50% of the votes. The candidate with the lowest votes, Candidate D, is eliminated and their votes transferred to the voters' second preference.
Again, there is no clear winner, so we eliminate the candidate with the lowest votes in this round, Candidate B, and transfer their votes to the two remaining candidates based on our voters’ preference.
In this round, Candidate A has achieved the quota and is declared the winner.
