Sustainability

One of TSDSU's core organisational behaviours is a committment to principles of sustainability. We're keen to try an reduce our impact on the environment and to engage our students in sustainable projects and discussions. This page is a summary of our work on sustainability, with lots of details on how you can get involved. Got an idea for a new project? Get in touch!

Green Impact

We are proud to have achieved Green Impact 'Good' Accreditation.

Green Impact is an environmental accreditation and awards scheme run by the National Union of Students. The project brings together staff and students to green campuses, curriculums and communities across the country.

NUS recognises the potential of staff and students to change the way their institutions behave, from the bottom up. Working across UK students’ unions, universities and colleges and community organisations, Green Impact supports teams and departments to make simple, tangible and powerful changes in behaviour and policy through an online workbook of criteria.

Our UWTSD Green Impact Interns help TSDSU officers and staff in achieving their goals. TSDSU received its first Green Impact Award in 2013 - we currently hold the 'Good' accreditation - and we are continuing our progress to improve our impact on our environment and provide opportunities for our students to make a difference in terms of sustainability and green issues.

The University is also committed to a comprehensive Green agenda, and together we are working to improve the sustainability of our campuses, to green our students and staff and improve the positive impact that UWTSD has on our world and resources.

Our Green Team:

All of our staff and officers are committed to principles of Sustainability but this year we have nominated Josh Whale (Lampeter Campus President) and Rhys Dart (Chief Executive) as our internal SU Sustainability champions. They are tasked with supporting our Green Part-time Officers: Becky Ricketts (Carmarthen) and Ella Wilkinson (Swansea). We work closely with the University's Sustainability Delivery Team, and particularly Jennifer Lloyd, who also sits on our SU sustainability committee.

Meet our Green Impact Interns here, and look out for opportunities to get involved!

We meet regularly as a team to discuss sustainability issues and ideas, and regularly suggest ideas to student council for discussion and adoption, check out the Big Ideas and Policy Update sections of the website for more details, a summary of our work this year is included below...

Our Policies & Campaigns:

This year Student Council has set policy on the following sustainability themes:

  • Divest Barclays: Students’ Union to commit to not working with Barclays on banking, advertising, sponsorship or recruitment. Students’ Union to lobby the University to cut all ties with Barclays.
  • Votes at 16: Seek confirmation that MPs will attend the debate and support the Bill. Raise awareness of the issue to students.
  • Living Wage: SU to lobby the University to commit to becoming a Living Wage Employer. Consider the feasibility of the Students’ Union becoming a Living Wage Employer.
  • SU Domestic Air Flights Ban: For the Students’ Union to ban business air travel for staff and officers within Great Britain. For there to be a system created to make allowances for air travel on an individual basis based on access needs.
  • Sweatshop Free Campaign: To lobby the University to sign up to ‘Electronics Watch’. To lobby the University to include student representation on any University purchasing committees.

Our Projects:

We have some excellent ongoing sustainability projects, and we're always looking for more volunteers! Check out the project information below or visit our get involved page to find out more!

  • The Big Plant - for the past two years our volunteers have got together and planted 800 trees on the Llys Nini site over two weekends. Look out for Big plant 3 coming Autumn 2018! Register your interest here.
  • Llys Nini Volunteering - loads of opportunities available at our friendly neighbourhood animal welfare centre, volunteer with the animals, maintain the gounds or shake that fundraising bucket!
  • On the Lampeter campus? Volunteer at the Lampeter Allotment - contact Bea for more details.
  • For information on our UWTSD Energy Shutdown, Fairtrade Fortnight and Go Green Week activities, check out our page on the Uni website.
